How to Plan a Sensory Friendly Classroom

A new way of teaching is to create a sensory friendly classroom. This may sound like a new idea but it actually is not. Over the past couple of years, we have seen an increase in how children learn and interact with their peers. Although our kids’ brains are growing, we also have a constant bombardment of messages we receive from television, radio, internet, and other sources. As a result, many kids are being exposed to too much information at one time without developing the skills they need to problem solve, learn, and interact effectively in the classroom.

To create a sensory friendly classroom, you don’t have to rely on having a large amount of pictures, artworks, or videos.

Instead, you can focus on using various sensory tools that are fun and engaging. One tool to help create a sensory friendly classroom is to use a “kinesthetic learning” method. By using this method, students are engaged and have fun while they learn. Another fun sensory activity you can implement in the classroom is “tactile flash cards”. Flash cards of written words or phrases such as “bath”, “brush”, “book”, “color”, “day”, “game”, etc.

The reason why “kinesthetic learning” is an excellent sensory friendly classroom activity for your kids is because the entire class gets involved and uses their senses to learn.

In addition, students take in a variety of emotions from hearing, seeing, touching, and even listening. Thus, they develop emotional, mental, physical, and interpersonal skills. When students are actively involved in the learning process, they tend to retain information better than when they are sitting still and watching something. Also, if the student notices that he or she is developing a certain skill, then they can try to practice that skill.

For example, in the classroom, if the child’s hand goes to his or her mouth then the child has actually developed an automatic, instinctive reaction. This skill can then be practiced by the parent, who can demonstrate how to do it and demonstrate how it feels to the child. However, if the parent demonstrates it the right way then the child will automatically use it and the parent will know that the child has learned new information. Parents can use tactile tools to reinforce this development.

There are many ways to make your classroom a sensory friendly one.

You just need to get creative! One way to help kids learn new information in a sensory environment is to create a space that is rich with textures and colors. Install art materials in the room such as felt and fabric. If you have a large amount of white space in your classroom then you could add a large photo of an animal or a landscape. Creating these rich environments will help kids feel more comfortable and at ease in the classroom.

Finally, you can teach kids in a sensory classroom by making their lives richer through heavy work activities and structured tasks. One great activity that could be used to help develop sensory awareness in your students is story time. Spend some time planning a storyline that could lead up to a sensory discovery or activity. In this way, you help your child connect what they are hearing and seeing with their own sensory experiences.
